Honours Golf Company Appoints John Harbison as General Manager of Cherokee Ridge Country Club

Birmingham, Ala. – Honours Golf Company has announced that John Harbison will serve as general manager and director of golf of Cherokee Ridge Country Club, a semi-private club offering a full range of amenities, including an 18-hole championship golf course, in Union Grove, Ala.

Harbison is a seasoned executive and golf professional with nearly three decades of experience in the hospitality industry. The position at Cherokee Ridge brings him back to northeast Alabama where he spent much of his youth in Huntsville and Guntersville.

“We welcome John Harbison to the Honours Golf team,” said Bob Barrett, Honours Golf CEO. “His hands-on management style and leadership experience at high-end clubs and high-volume courses complement our culture of member service and value. In addition, he is a tireless promoter of the game of golf and has become nationally recognized as one of the top youth golf instructors in the country.”

Harbison said he wants patrons to be impressed every time they come to Cherokee Ridge. “Honours is known for having top course conditions and providing quality memorable experiences for our guests. Every tee time counts; every touch point counts,” he said.

For the past seven years, Harbison has served as general manager and director of golf at several high-end properties -- Westchester Country Club in Florida, The Prairie Club in Nebraska and most recently on an interim basis at Huntsville Country Club in Alabama. Each position has afforded him opportunities to improve member service, course conditions and overall operations, with measurable results and accolades. During his tenure at the Prairie Club located in the Nebraska Sand Hills on the Snake River Canyon, the destination golf resort was named the “Best Overnight Golf Destination" by Golf Digest and ranked among the “Top 25 Golf Resorts in the U.S." by Golf Week.

Harbison looks forward to introducing more people to Cherokee Ridge and growing the game of golf in the area. “With Cherokee Ridge’s transition to semi-private country club, we have the opportunity to expand our golf program by offering accessible and affordable expert PGA instruction for players of all levels,” he said.

He has completed more than 10,000 career hours of personalized golf instruction to seniors, juniors, women and those physically challenged. He also wrote a golf instruction manual for beginners and developed a core curriculum for instructing golf to those who suffer from Parkinson’s disease.

His efforts led U.S. Kids Golf to include him among its list of top golf instructors for children in 2009, 2010 and 2011. For four consecutive years, The PGA of America named Harbison to its “President’s Council on Growing the Game,” an honor limited to only 500 PGA professionals each year, for his efforts to build participation in the game of golf.

Harbison began his career as an assistant golf professional in the mid-1980s, gaining experience at various country clubs and resorts as part of the official PGA apprentice program.

From 1988 to 1996, Harbison oversaw operations at three semi-private facilities -- Marion Oaks Country Club and Huntington Golf Club in Ocala, Fla., and Rolling Hills Golf Club in Cleveland, Tenn. -- as a regional manager and head golf professional. After leading golf operations at Viera East Golf Club in Viera, Fla., into profitability, he was selected to join the management team to launch The Majors Golf Club, an 18-hole Arnold Palmer signature golf facility with golf learning center in Palm Bay, Fla. He returned to Ocala in 2001 as head golf professional and general manager at Marion Oaks and Huntington.

Harbison is a PGA Class A member and is active in the Club Managers Association of America.
